How To Troubleshoot Your Furnace Like A Pro

Furnace troubles are highly unwelcome in the middle of winter, but waiting for an HVAC technician isn’t your only option. You can check, diagnose, and even solve a few problems yourself, before going in for professional furnace repair. Petrocelli Services is here today with a quick guide to furnace troubleshooting.

What seems to be the problem?

  • No heat: Start by checking for blown fuses and tripped breakers. Then verify the temperature settings on your thermostat. The desired temperature should always be higher than the current room temperature. Check whether the pilot light is on.
  • Inadequate heat: Make sure your thermostat is set to the right temperature. Next, inspect the furnace filters to ensure they’re clean. Also check whether the size of your furnace is adequate for the size of the space it’s supposed to heat.
  • Restricted airflow: Check that the furnace filter is clean and unclogged. Inspect your ducting for leaks, gaps or damage.
  • Excessive noise: This could be an indicator of a mechanical problem, or of loose or dislodged furnace components. Run a check or call an HVAC technician.
  • “Unstoppable” blower: If your blower is running continuously, the limit switch on its motor might need replacement. Your HVAC technician can do that for you.
  • Frequent cycling: If your furnace keeps switching on and off, have your thermostat checked out. Also check for clogged filters and ducting leakages. An oversized furnace could also be the problem.
  • No pilot light: If the pilot light doesn’t stay lit after a relighting attempt, the thermocouple or the gas supply could be the problem.

If the above tips don’t get you to the source of the problem, or if you’d like to opt for peace of mind with a professional furnace repair, give us a call.
